Friends of the San Francisco Public Library believes in the power of libraries to promote equity by ensuring everyone has free access to the information, resources, and opportunities to thrive. Friends is a community of individuals, families, and institutions who love our San Francisco Public Library and work to make it exceptional. We are building a future in which libraries serve as robust centers of 21st Century literacy, economic opportunity, life-long learning, discovery, and community.
Our iconic annual Library Laureates event recognizes acclaimed writers and celebrates the importance of libraries as inclusive and democratic institutions that empower all people. Notable writers such as Joyce Carol Oates, Daniel Handler, T.J. Styles, Rebecca Solnit, R.O. Kwon, and Michael Chabon have taken part in the past, when we gathered in our beautiful Main Library to dine and indulge in literary works. Undeterred by the pandemic and inspired by our event’s meaning, we have transformed Library Laureates into a series of smaller, intimate virtual events taking place over six months in 2021.
