Current Volunteer Opportunities


Donation Center


Volunteers are needed to help sort books Monday – Saturday at our Donation Center, located at 438 Treat Ave. This is a great opportunity for those interested in making a weekly volunteer commitment. For more information about our Donation Center, click here.

Book Sales

  • Our 46th Annual Big Book Sale will be held at Fort Mason from September 21-26, 2010.  Click here to volunteer at this exciting event!
  • Volunteers are also needed for our outdoor Step Sales, which are held on the Larkin Street steps of the Main Library each Wednesday of the month, April – October.
  • Volunteers may also help out at our monthly $1 Sales at our Donation Center in the Mission district. These sales are held the second Saturday of each month, rain or shine. We need help with set-up the Fridays before and with pack-up the days of the sales.

Book Bay Fort Mason


Located at historic Fort Mason Center, this large bookstore sells new and used donated books. Volunteers provide sales and customer service support. Cash register training available. Open everyday in Building C, from 10 AM – 6 PM. Volunteers are trained to use a cash register.

Book Bay Main


Volunteers are needed to assist staff at our store at the Main Library. Located inside the Grove Street entrance, this bookstore operates during all Main Library open hours. Cash register training available. Volunteers are especially needed in the evenings or the weekends.

Book Buddies


Read to hospitalized children in San Francisco. Book Buddies are asked to make a commitment of two to three hours a week for a minimum of one year. Volunteers need to be 18 years old and must attend a one-hour orientation.

2010 Orientation Dates:
Thursday, October 14th at 5:30 PM

All orientations are held in the Main Library Children’s Center on the 2nd Floor.

Branch Library Book Pick-Ups


Volunteers, with their own vehicle, pick up donated books at neighborhood branch libraries and take them to our Book Donation Center. Must be able to pick up a 30 lb. box of books. This is a great way to get exercise and help the library! 

Office Assistance


Assist with mailings, data entry, and other tasks in our office at 391 Grove Street.

Special Events


Volunteer at Friends events! Some events include the San Francisco International Poetry Festival, the Annual Laureates Dinner, branch library opening and closing parties and author events.
