Mission

The Mission Branch Library, opened in 1888, was the first branch established in the San Francisco Public Library system and was located in a storefront two blocks from its present location. The branch was renovated after 1906 earthquake/fire, and in 1915, a new city-owned branch was built with Carnegie funds in its current location. In 1997, the branch was renovated to meet modern code standards, establish disabled access and ensure it was earthquake-safe.

Friends raised over $380,000 for the renovations and it reopened in 1999. This branch will not be included in the current renovation process.
