For every dollar spent supporting operations and services at the San Francisco Public Library, city residents see a return of over $3.00.

How We Help

Friends of the San Francisco Public Library provides critical support for the San Francisco Public Library and related literary and educational programs.

Children, Teens and Adults

Children love libraries, which is why Friends supports Library programs that help children develop a love of learning and discovery. Whether through lap sit readings, unique performers, or more structured programs like Summer Reading, Friends sponsors programs that open young minds and imaginations.

Teen Programs are presented throughout the city's public library system to meet the diverse interests of San Francisco residents, ages 13 through 18.  These programs promote educational and recreational enrichment along with lifelong learning opportunities. Programs increase opportunities for building social skills, interacting with different generations, acquiring mentors, and learning critical thinking skills. Programs increase awareness of library resources, promote individual growth, and prevent youth violence.

Each year, over 30,000 visitors attend events that provoke thought, inform, and educate. These include author readings, lectures, films, panel discussions and much, much more.

A Green Future for Public Libraries

SFPL is now going green throughout its entire infrastructure while making a massive effort to educate the public about the environment. As private-side partners, we act as a conduit between the public institution, the community it serves, and donors interested in advancing green practices in San Francisco. Throughout the city, with great regard for equity, library patrons are seeing enormous improvements in their neighborhood branch libraries including: high quality computers, added space, designs that accommodate community needs and uses, energy-efficient lighting, non-toxic furniture, and excellent indoor air quality. Friends is committed to acquiring the necessary funding to create and furnish green libraries, from bricks and mortar to recycled furnishings to sustainable maintenance programs, and to involve and educate the community in the process.
