Evolution of San Francisco

Please join Friends of the San Francisco Public Library as three noted authors will speak on the evolution of the City. Topics presented will be the gold rush and it’s impact from a long-time SF historian, the current state of affairs in our city according to a long-time activist plus the future and how our city may look one day as presented by a noted writer.

Q & A afterwards followed by book signing and sale.  Event is held in the Latino Community Center, Rm. B.

AUTHOR BIOS:

Rand Richards is a San Francisco-based historian, author and lecturer. Two of his books are local best-sellers: Historic San Francisco: A Concise History & Guide and Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City‘s Past. He has given lectures at the California Historical Society, the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, the San Francisco Public Library and the San Francisco Historical Association. The latter organization recently awarded his contributions to knowledge of San Francisco history. His most recent book is Mud, Blood and Gold: San Francisco in 1849.

Chris Carlsson is a SF based author, activist, teacher, filmmaker, artist and graphic designer. He is author of Nowtopia: How Pirate Programmers, Outlaw Bicyclists & Vacant-Lot Gardeners are Inventing the Future Today and has edited & contributed to many other books & articles. He is largely credited with being the force behind the founding of Critical Mass, the San Francisco based Bicycle Coalition that meets monthly. His numerous awards include recognition from the SF Bay Guardian, SF Bicycle Coalition & the SF Historical Society to name a few.

Peter Booth Wiley has co-authored two books on the West: Empires in the Sun: The Rise of the New American West and America’s Saints: The Rise of Mormon Power. His other books are Yankee in the Land of the Gods, Commodore Perry & the Opening of Japan, A Free Library in this City and National Trust Guide San Francisco: America’s Guide for Architecture and History Travelers. His articles have appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review, The Nation, The Sierra Club, Zyzzyva, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe to name but a few.
