Opened in March 2009 in the heart of the Mission District, the new, centrally located Book
Donation Center is six times the size of our old Fort Mason facility.
Located between 17th and 18th Streets (near Harrison and Folsom), the
5,000 square-foot warehouse will dramatically expand our book
operations.
Since the late 1970’s, Friends of the SFPL’s Donation center has operated out of a 800 square-foot room in Fort Mason’s Bldg. D. The Fort Mason Donation Center housed about 12 volunteers and in its first five years, processed an annual average of 100,000 books. Since then, book donations have increased significantly and Friends book operations grew—and grew. Twenty years later, Friends’ book operations team and volunteers were located in the same small space, processing nearly 1 million books with an entire room turnover rate of 50-60 times a year.
The new Mission Book Donation Center will allow us to process each donation more efficiently. More room for books means more books in our stores and sales and allows us to nearly double our volunteer capacity. Additionally, the extra storage space will allow us to increase our online book sales potential by almost 500 percent.
Book donors will also find the Treat Ave. location has huge advantages: the center is on the ground floor, which makes for easy drop offs, and is easily accessed by public transportation (BART, MUNI Lines 12, 14, 22, 27, 33, 49, 53, and SamTrans).
The new Book Donation center is a more volunteer-friendly environment, with a full kitchen, a break room and plenty of natural light. Treat Ave. creates many new opportunities for volunteers, who are needed to make this move a success.
