We recycle over 600,000 books each year, keeping them in the hands of readers and out of landfills, saving nearly 50 tons of paper and 250 tons of green house gas emissions.

Book Donations – Friends in the Literary Community

Each year Friends receives nearly half a million donated books, which we in turn resell to the public through two bookstores and a number of book sales – including the Big Book Sale, the largest book sale on the west coast. All profits benefit the Library and many books are donated to schools and other non-profit organizations. Notable books are offered to the special collections of the Library.

New Donation Center at 438 Treat Avenue is open!

* Visit our Donation Center at 438 Treat Avenue (between 17th and 18th Streets, near Harrison and Folsom). We will gladly accept donations on Monday - Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.  Call 415-522-8600 for more information.

* You may also bring small quantities of books to your branch library. Please call your branch ahead of time to let them know you are coming.

* If you do not have a vehicle and have four boxes or more, call 415-522-8604 and we will arrange to have a volunteer contact you for a book pick up.
